The son of a Delhi-based jeweller who was kidnapped here on April 29 for ransom by two persons has been rescued by a Delhi police team, police said.

Thirty-two-year-old Rohit Verma, son of Vijay Verma, owner of a jewellery shop in Delhi, was rescued on May 4 by the team led by additional deputy commissioner of police Karunakaran from a house at Kammalankulam in the district, police said today.

Police arrested one Velmurugan and his accomplice Manohar, who had held Rohit captive, while the owner of the house where the victim was detained managed to escape.

According to police, Rohit, a frequent visitor to gambling houses, was befriended by Velmurugan, a native of Tirunelveli working in Mumbai.

Velmurugan and Manohar, both working in gambling houses in Mumbai, hatched a plan to kidnap Rohit and lured him to come to Tirunelveli for gambling.

Rohit arrived in Tirunelveli on April 29 and was taken by Velmurugan to the house at Kammalankulam where he was detained.

The duo then contacted Rohit's father and demanded a ransom of Rs five crore for Rohit's release and after negotiations settled for Rs1.1 crore.

But the jeweller did not pay the ransom and lodged a complaint with Delhi police.
