Angered and shocked over the terror strike in Delhi, Parliament today condemned the incident with members setting aside party affiliations to unitedly demand strong action against the culprits so that it acts as a deterrent.

Speaking after Home Minister P Chidambaram made a statement on the blast in both the Houses of Parliament, members of various parties, including BJP, Left, Samajwadi Party, BSP, AIADMK, JD(U), NCP, Trinamool Congress, DMK, Shiv Sena, BJD, RJD and LJP extended full support to the government in steps to track down the perpetrators.

In the Lok Sabha, senior BJP leader LK Advani said, "We are saddened that the capital of India has been attacked again."

Noting that the attack was significant as it occurred near Parliament, he hoped that the government "will use all agencies and means to bring the culprits to book."

He observed that the blast occurred close to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 attacks in the US and wondered if there was a connection as terrorists tend to think on these lines.

"My suggestion is that keeping in mind this incident the government should take all necessary measures to bring the culprits to book," Advani said.

In the Rajya Sabha, leader of the opposition Arun Jaitley expressed his sense of "anger", saying there seemed to be a "kind of helpless situation" where terrorist groups can strike at will.

He said the guilty should be brought to book and subsequent actions should be such that these act as deterrent.

Basudeb Acharia of the CPI(M) termed the blasts a "disturbing act" and said two explosions have taken place at the same site within a span of four months.

While expressing his condolences, Acharia said the entire nation is united and resolute to fight terrorism.

"Terrorists have no religion. They are out to divide and destabilise the nation. There is a need for united action against them," he said.

Expressing support to the government in the fight against terror, Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party said, "Whenever there is a terror act, a particular community is looked at with suspicion. This is not good. It should stop. It is dangerous. It has happened several times and this still continues."

He asked the government to grant financial assistance and jobs to the aggrieved families.

Sharad Yadav of the JD(U) condemned the blast and expressed concern that it had occurred just a kilometre from Parliament and despite all precautions.

Asserting that the nation would not succumb such acts and face the challenge head-on, Yadav asked the government to consult experienced people in Parliament.

He also asked the government to involve people like cleaners, vendors and coolies as informants, saying explosives are planted in dustbins and trains and such people could be a useful source of inputs to track down the culprits.

Describing the incident as challenge as it happened in the heart of the nation and at the same place as three months back, SC Mishra (BSP) said, "We should jointly stand."

He suggested that VVIPs should restrain themselves from going to hospitals as doctors and police personnel there get diverted from the tasks they are required to do.
