A Delhi court has rejected a plea by a suspected militant of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Mohd Rafiq Shah, facing trial for carrying out serial blasts here on Diwali-eve in 2005, for being allowed to pursue higher studies.

Additional sessions judge RK Chauhan dismissed Shah's application seeking permission to appear in M Phil entrance examinations of Kashmir University at Srinagar as "withdrawn".

Shah's counsel Bhavuk Chauhan withdrew the plea after Delhi police opposed it on the ground that there was no sufficient time to verify the details mentioned in the application.

Chauhan had submitted that Shah wanted to pursue M Phil course as per rules and without any illegality.

Public prosecutor Rajeev Mohan opposed the plea of Shah stating that the police could not verify the authenticity of the contents of the application due to paucity of time.

Shah had moved the application in the court on September 4 that he wanted to appear in the entrance examination on September 6.

Mohan submitted that Shah was sent to Srinagar earlier also for appearing in an examination but he returned here after six months, thereby hampering the trial proceedings in the cases.

To this, Shah's counsel sought the court's permission to withdraw the application, which was allowed.

Shah, along with the prime accused Tariq Ahmed Dar and others, is facing trial for murder, attempt to murder and other offences under IPC and Explosive Substances Act.

The serial blasts at three different places -- Sarojini Nagar, Paharganj and Kalkaji -- on Diwali-eve on October 29, 2005 claimed 67 lives and injured over 225.
