Delhi Police have uncovered a plot hatched by a syndicate of property dealers, policemen and criminals to grab prime residential properties in south Delhi.

In the past fortnight alone, police have come across eight such cases, involving properties worth Rs50 crore and more. The gang used to operate by lodging false criminal cases against homeowners in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

“These gangs used to blackmail people living in bungalows in south and south-west Delhi by filing false cases and forcing them to vacate their homes,” a police officer said. The main accused is a former informer of Delhi Police.

The racket flourished with the help of corrupt policemen, who helped criminals lodge fake cases against the homeowners, mostly under Section 307 (attempt to murder). The police would then send notices to the homeowners, accusing them of wrongdoing. Some gang members would also pose as policemen to scare them.

“The main accused, Anoop Kumar Juneja, was allegedly involved in a shootout in Kalkaji (south Delhi) on March 21. He claimed to have been shot by two people. But his disappearance from Max hospital, where he was admitted after the incident, cast doubts about his claims. He is an accused in several land grabbing cases and we suspect he is the leader of the pack,” a senior police officer said.

“We have arrested some of Juneja’s henchmen. We have also launched a manhunt for him. The crime branch is supervising the case,” the officer said.

The gang successfully got Vivek Gupta, the owner of bungalow no. 451 in the posh Defence Colony, to vacate his home. They filed two criminal cases against him in UP and forced Gupta to pay a hefty amount to settle the case. Similarly, the gang filed a criminal case against Kamal Arora in Amroha, also in UP. In both cases, the complainant’s address was wrong. “The gang made big money by blackmailing such people. They received Rs6.5 crore for these two deals, “said a police officer.

Juneja is named in more than 48 cases of snatching, bank robbery and land grabbing in Delhi.
