Winter has its share of happiness and sorrow for the weather-beaten Amdavadis, particularly seeking some respite after summer’s severe.

However, this month last year also came as a mixed blessing for them, if one goes by official data of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s birth-death department, the keeper of birth and death records in the city.

While December 2011 has seen more births and deaths in city, compared to any other month in the year, it was also a killer month with 4,663 deaths registered in that month alone!

Believe it or not, AMC’s data states that total number of births in December 2011 was 13,143 - the highest in the year! The average figure of births for the year was around 6,000-7,000 every month. But surprisingly, in December, the total births jumped to as high as 13,000. Similarly, while the average death figures for months other than December is around 3,000, in December it shoots to over 4,000.

DNA tried to find out the possible reason behind this rather unusual trend. Can there be some biological reasons involved, we asked city physicians, who too couldn’t pin-point the exact reasons.

Physician Dr V Arun, said, “I believe this is sheer co-incidence. More deaths in December can be attributed to among others, the chilly weather, and it is quite possible that aged people become vulnerable in the winter season. Also, octogenarians have higher chances of getting ill leading to their deaths. But, I can’t find any reason for most number of births in one particular month and the birth ratio can’t be vouched,” Arun said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr Keyur Patel, a physician said that every year, there are a few months in a year when more births are reported and a few have higher mortality figure than other months.

However, if the month turns out to be same for both death and birth, it is an interesting co-incidence, he added.
