It is the same old crime of credit card frauds which have hit the city in a new format with new players and slightly different modus operandi - with the help of data thefts. The city, which was badly hit by credit card frauds from 2008 to 2010, was spared these crimes when the miscreants moved, to Hyderabad and Delhi, before being busted by the city police.
“Normally, the details of the usage of the credit card is saved in the system and when this data comes in the hands of the miscreants, they start misusing it,” police inspector, cyber crime cell, Detection of Crime Branch, Kiran Patel, told DNA. Patel also said that behind every credit card fraud there is the misuse of data following data thefts.
The credit card frauds, also, have ‘graduated’ from being only online crimes -- after accessing the data, crooks used to purchase air-tickets or indulge in online shopping -- to physically contacting the card holder, accessing the card and then using it for purchases or withdrawing cash.
The city police have arrested cyber criminals from Hyderabad and Delhi in the past who were accessing data and misusing credit cards. “Such crimes have either stopped or are not reported, as sometimes even the victims are from other countries, who visit the city and use their credit cards,” a police source said.
The frauds, however, have changed and now the miscreants physically contact the credit card holders and misuse their cards.
“Data theft has always been at the bottom of the credit card scams and the credit cards were misused only after accessing the data by the miscreants,” police inspector, cyber crime cell, detection of crime branch, KK Patel told DNA.
Vishal Sharma, a resident of Ghaziabad, was arrested by the police a week back with four credit cards and details of seven others from the Lal Darwaza area. He contacted the card holders and lured them into converting the cards from Gold to Platinum Credit Card.
