Cyber crime cell clicks on modernisation drive

If everything goes as planned, the cyber crime cell of the Ahmedabad city crime branch will be able to detect cyber crime with more speed and accuracy. The cell has sought state government's support for buying more software to help detect various kinds of cyber crime, which have become a frequent affair in the city these days.

They have sought cyber tools, software that can help detect and check cyber crime more efficiently. The demand forms a part of the modernisation drive initiated by the cyber cell.

An official on condition of anonymity said, "The modernisation drive is on. We have asked for more software, which are available in the local market and which will help detection in cyber crime easier."

Cyber crimes include a host of offences such as e-mail hacking, phishing (enticing customers of financial institutions to pass on sensitive information of their account) and others.  The cyber cell has also demanded more vehicles and staff to efficiently deal with such cases. A source said that the present strength of the cell is 20 police personnel and addition has been demanded to the same.

The cell has been successful in detecting various cyber crimes in the recent past, including the visa scam in which sleuths of the cell arrested scamster Ashok Desai who duped people by promising them visas. Once the modernisation plan is successful, the cell will be in a position to trace growing number of cyber crimes. An official said, "There is a growing requirement of new cyber tools to monitor and check cyber crimes."

The source said that the cell gets complaints in form of applications which the cell tries to deal with. The cell has been largely successful in dealing with such applications. The also source also said that while the existing computers and technology will continue to be used, the department will need new software to handle the ever growing cyber crimes in the city.

An official said, "The machinery used earlier will remain the same, only new software will be required to be installed. The idea is to up the number of detection of cyber crimes using these." The source added that there was a growing need for such software as new means of hacking and phishing are being invented with every passing day.
