Curfew was lifted today from all parts of Kashmir but normal life was disrupted in the valley due to a three-day strike call given by hardline Hurriyat Conference to focus on the Kashmir issue during US President Barack Obama's visit to India.

A police spokesperson said curfew has been lifted from all parts of Kashmir and the situation across the valley so far was peaceful. "There is no curfew or restrictions in place anywhere in the Kashmir Valley," he said.

Curfew was imposed in nine police station areas of Srinagar city yesterday as a precautionary measure as authorities apprehended protests and stone-pelting incidents in these areas after Friday congregational prayers.

The life in the valley, however, was disrupted due to the strike call given by the Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani to highlight the Kashmir issue while the US president was in India.

Geelani had asked people to observe 'civil curfew' for three days from today, when Obama arrives in the country.

The main markets in Srinagar city and other towns of the valley wore a deserted look with shops, business establishments and private offices remaining closed and public transport off the roads.

Most of the private schools have decided to shut down on the strike days as some of their buses have been targeted by stone-pelting protestors during the ongoing unrest.

Although government offices were open, the attendance was thin due to non-availability of public transport facilities. However, some private vehicles could be seen on some routes.

Security forces were patrolling different areas of Srinagar and other major towns to maintain law and order and scuttle any protests by the separatists.

Kashmir Valley has been in the grip of protests, strikes and curfew since June when a 17-year-old boy was killed by a tear smoke shell allegedly fired by police at Rajouri Kadal area of the city.
