Though their prime duty is to prevent crime and protect citizens, a section of city policemen have found themselves in the dock time and again. A number of city cops were subjected to punishment transfer the 2009 hooch tragedy. A police inspector is already in judicial custody for allegedly accepting bribes from a bootlegger. And now, two more constables have been sent out of Ahmedabad for protecting a gambling den.

Police sources said Pravin Bhadoria and Ranubha, constables at Kagdapith police station, have been transferred from Ahmedabad for allegedly accepting protection money from a man who ran a gambling den. Pravin has been transferred to Kutch while Ranubha has sent off to Tapi district by an order of director general of police (DGP), Chitaranjan Singh late last week.

Pravin and Ranubha had come under the scanner after Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) nabbed one Harish Jat, who allegedly used to run his gambling den in Pathan Ni Chali near Raipur Big Bazar. The DCB officials had raided this den early February this year and arrested 27 persons for gambling, the sources added.

During interrogation, Jat, who was also wanted in another case, had claimed that Pravin and Ranubha used to accept money from him for allowing him to carry on his criminal activity. A scrutiny of Jat's mobile phone records established the two constables' contacts with him.

Gauging the seriousness of the case, DCB officials reported the
case to zone-VI deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Sachin Badshah. The DCP, acting promptly, transferred Pravin and Ranubha to Vatva GIDC police station. Badshah also reported the matter to the DGP who subsequently transferred the duo out of Ahmedabad a few days ago as punishment.

Incidentally, 39 constables of city police were slapped punishment transfer after July 2009 hooch tragedy that had left more than 150 dead.

Similarly, VM Jani, the suspended police inspector of Dariapur is under judicial custody for allegedly accepting Rs20 lakh bribe from bootlegger.
