After busting a betting den on Thursday, Anandnagar police, on Friday, arrested one more bookie. According to police, Mitul Dhanji Patel, 40, was also involved in the cricket betting racket. He was arrested from his residence near Jivraj Mehta overbridge at Shyamal crossroads.
Police recovered more records of cricket betting racket being run from the city and spread across the state. On Thursday night during the India-West Indies match, police raided the residence of one Jitendra Tanna (32) and his father Jayanti Tanna (54), while they were taking calls from different parties to book their bets on the match result. Later, the mastermind behind the gambling den, one Rajni Patel, was also arrested.
The arrested trio used to operate as bookies for cricket matches. The police teams jointly raided the Tannas' residence late on Thursday at B-304, Vraj Vihar 5 in Anandnagar area. During the raid, the police seized a laptop, a TV, two account books and 23
mobile phones.
According to MS Sindha, police inspector of Anandnagar, Rajni Patel was also betting his own money apart from taking bets as a bookie. "We have learnt that they could have earned Rs3.3 lakh if West Indies had won and Rs1.2 lakh if India had won," said Sindha. According to Sindha the data from the seized laptop indicates a statewide nexus
between bookies.
From the laptop and account books, the police were able to estimate that the trio was handling bets between Rs33.85 lakh and Rs24 lakh in session bets and the remaining amount in bets on the matches. The books had a record of the names of bookies they dealt with along with a record of names of their
30 customers.
"To bust the entire network, we will present all the four accused before the court and acquire remand in the coming days," said Sindha.
