A credit race has begun among parties fighting for Telangana, resulting in irreparable cracks in the joint action committee (JAC) formed for the purpose. The Congress is worried other parties may take away credit if the state is formed, though it is the UPA at the Centre that is facing all the trouble.
“The way the TRS is emerging the champion of Telangana is making Congress leaders in the region think twice whether to continue in the JAC,” a senior political analyst said.
With Congressmen at the forefront in Telangana as well in the rest of the state, the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP is also bothered. It had backed out after promising to support the resolution for Telangana and declared that it was committed to a united Andhra. However, with Telangana in agitation mode again after home minister Chidambaram’s second statement on the issue, TDP leaders in the region are in a bind.
“It is like getting caught between the devil and the deep sea,” a senior party leader from Telangana said.
The TDP was not in favour of joining the JAC due to differences with the TRS. However, JAC convener Kodandaram, a political science professor at Osmania University, convinced it on Sunday to become a part. “The TDP is joining the JAC,” he said.
The cracks in the JAC became evident when it tried to take certain key decisions on taking the movement forward. While the TRS was keen on a more radical approach, Congress MLAs were against violence. “We don’t want to cause trouble to the common man. The indefinite shutdown will only have a negative impact,” senior party MLA from Telangana R Damodar Reddy said.
“There are serious political differences in the JAC. The Congress is not comfortable sharing the platform with the TDP. The TDP has reservations about the TRS. There is a big question on its continuance,” a political analyst said.
