The CPI(M) took its first steps on Sunday towards finding the reasons for its humiliating defeat in the 2009 general election, with the party politburo giving the green signal to a draft “rectification document” at a meeting here. The development is significant considering that West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was conspicuous by his absence at the meeting, ostensibly called to suggest ways to arrest the party’s downward slide in his state. The party’s loss in Bengal is being attributed, among other things, to the state government’s inept handling of the Nandigram and Singur issues and failure to explain its industrial policy in a coherent manner to supporters.

Breaking the unwritten code of not commenting on the internal affairs of other parties, the CPI(M) issued a written statement on Sunday on the infighting in the BJP.
