CPI(M) said on Tuesday that it would go ahead with its decision to move an adjournment motion on price rise in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, dampening government's efforts to end a confrontation on the issue.
"We want tangible commitments from the government to take steps to control rising prices. That is why we are pressing for an adjournment motion," CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said.
The Left leader's reaction came close on the heels of reports that the government appeared to have persuaded the opposition to have a discussion on the issue of price rise in the Lok Sabha tomorrow under a rule that does not entail voting.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters that the Lower House would take up the discussion on the statement of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the price situation.
Bansal's announcement came close on the heels of a luncheon meeting Mukherjee had with the Left leaders and the Business Advisory Committee meeting of the Lok Sabha.
Yechury said his statement earlier in the day when he had declared that CPI-M was firm on taking up an adjournment motion in Parliament on spiralling prices stands.
The winter session of Parliament got off to a stormy start on Tuesday with opposition in the Lok Sabha raising a variety of issues and Left parties protesting against price rise and giving an adjournment motion on the issue.
BJP has already made it clear that it would support the Left decision on the price rise issue.
BJP also announced plans to bring an adjournment motion on the issue of black money on Thursday, an issue on which it expects the Left's backing.
