Criticising home minister P Chidambaram for his statements on West Bengal government's handling of law and order, CPI today said he should not do politics on the issue and alleged that the nexus between Congress ally TMC and Maoists was well known.

"It is not proper for the home minister to make such statements. He has met senior police and administrative officials. It is a joint operation (against Naxals). So it is not proper to blame it on the state government," CPI leader D Raja said.

Chidambaram, who visited naxal-infested Lalgarh in West Bengal to review the situation there, later told reporters that the buck stops at the chief minister's table and he should take "stern measures" so that law and order is maintained in the state.

The home minister also said he carried a "mixed impression" about state government's role in the anti-Naxal operations and there were "good and weak points".

Reacting sharply to Chidambaram's statement, Raja said, "The home minister should do less politics. Everybody knows about the nexus between Trinamool Congress and the Maoists."

He further argued that naxal affected areas of the state shared borders with Jharkhand and other states and there was more to it than holding the Left government responsible.

The CPI leader asserted that Chidambaram's statement that he can offer his "good offices" if naxals and state government wanted to talk showed that "he may have had some feelers on talks.

"If there was any such line, the home minister should have told the chief minister when the two met," Raja said.
