Duty Magistrate Arul Varma dismissed the bail plea of Dr Sanjay Verma's wife Sumita Verma. The couple had appeared before it after expiry of their two days in police custody.
Slamming the doctor couple for trying to settle the case against them by offering Rs75,000 to their minor maid, whom they had allegedly left locked-up and starving in their flat while vacationing in Bangkok, a Delhi court on Friday rejected the bail plea of the medico's wife.
Duty Magistrate Arul Varma dismissed the bail plea of Dr Sanjay Verma's wife Sumita Verma. The couple had appeared before it after expiry of their two days in police custody.
The court extended the couple's police remand for another three days after the probe agency said it need their custody for further interrogation.
"Bail application for the accused (Sumita Verma) is dismissed. Both the accused are directed to appear before it on April 9," the court said.
Pleading for the bail, Sumita said she is a mother of an 11-year-old girl and there is no one in her family to look after her.
During the argument, the couple offered to pay Rs 75,000 as compensation to the maid and her family to settle the case.
Annoyed over the offer, the court said it was not possible as they were charged with non-compoundable offences.
The police said the couple had locked up the 13-year-old girl in their flat at Dwarka in South West Delhi on March 25 before leaving the country for Bangkok.
The girl, hailing from Jharkhand, was rescued four days later on March 29 after neighbours saw her crying in the flat's balcony.
Meanwhile, the court also asked the police to send a copy of the case file to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which too is probing it.
The couple had returned to the country on March 30, a day after the incident came to light, but had gone into hiding and was arrested on April 4, from near Lifestyle Mall in West Delhi's Rajouri Garden following a tip off.
The court earlier had denied anticipatory bail to them saying they had acted in an "inhuman" manner.
They had moved the court for anticipatory bail after an FIR was lodged against them and look-out notices were issued on April 2.
The police had lodged the FIR against them under the 23/26 Juvenile Justice Act, Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act, section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (punishment for wrongful Confinement), 370 (buying or disposing of any person as slave), 374 (unlawful compulsory labour) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC.
The girl, after her rescue, was taken to DDU Hospital where doctors said she was on verge of starvation. The couple had left for Bangkok locking her up and leaving food and water that lasted only for two days, the police had alleged.
