Couple held on charges of Maoist activities in Chhattisgarh

A Maoist couple who were allegedly active in Chhattisgarh state were today arrested in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The arrested were identified as M Vedama alias Chalapathi Rao who was commander of Guttikoya platoon in Kunta region of Chhattisgarh and his wife Gangotri alias Manjula. She worked as section commander of another group of the ultras in the Kunta region, they said.

Based on a credible information from Chhattisgarh police, the duo were nabbed at Cherukupalli village near Sathupalli town during a routine vehicle checking operation today, a senior police officer told PTI over phone.

The couple had been staying in Cherukupalli village for the last two years after allegedly severing links with the outfit following some differences and used to reportedly visit neighbouring Chhattisgarh state as part of their activities.

However, no weapons were seized from their possession, police
said.

The couple were booked under AP Public Security Act and further investigations were underway.
