Ahmedabad may not be the hub of companies as compared to the large metros of the country. But the corporate world of the city has chosen to spend lavishly to maintain relationships with clients this Diwali.

Apart from the usual greeting cards and chocolates, this year the corporate gifts have got bigger and more expensive.
The minimum cost of corporate gifts is believed to have increased by around Rs500, as they range from wristwatches to DVD players and from bedsheets to gift vouchers. Last year, Rs2,500 was the minimum cost of a corporate gift, which has gone up to Rs3,000.

With changing times, traditional gifts like sweets, fruit baskets, dry fruits and cakes, seem to have become old-fashioned. With the urge to make an impression on clients, companies have opted for luxurious and exotic gifts like digital cameras, MP3 players, DVDs, mobile phones, LCD TVs, spa packages, silverware and gold-plated items.

As they order in bulk, the gifts turn out to be less expensive for them. A number of companies have chosen to invest huge amounts in buying gifts for clients.

"Industries are doing well, and so are companies," said Gautam Patel, marketing head of A International Pvt Ltd. "This Diwali, we have increased the corporate gift budget by 300%. Though there has not been a remarkable rise in the number of clients, we have had good business this year. And so, we want to share our happiness with our clients by gifting them costlier items," he added.

The average price per gift has increased from the previous year.

An official of a steel giant said, "Our clients have increased; also, the gifts have become more expensive. Compared to last year, the cost of gifts is nearly 35% higher." He added, "There is no slowdown, and we have performed well. Giving better gifts is our way of celebrating this happiness with our customers and clients."

"Last year the price of gifts was a bit lower. Usually companies in Ahmedabad focus more on white goods. However, there will be a range of gift items starting from crockery sets and travel bags to other electronic items," said an official of an Ahmedabad-based conglomerate. "It is better to give gift vouchers of shopping malls. We have decided to gift vouchers to certain clients and customers, so that they can use them at their will," he added.
