Policemen and army men will soon be able to save more lives in emergencies by providing immediate medical help to victims before a doctor arrives.

In a first such initiative in the country, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is providing a basic emergency care course for security personnel. It is open to civilians as well.

“In many cases, accident victims die before reaching hospital. This happens because by the time they reach hospital, the damage has already been done. If the first person on the spot knows how to stop bleeding or administer first aid effectively, many people can survive,” said Dr Sanjeev Bhoj, the programme director at AIIMS.
The institute has trained more than 800 policemen till date. All of them have been trained to save lives in emergencies. Many of them are deployed in police control rooms (PCRs) and they are the ones who reach the accident spot first.

“Every Saturday we have a separate class for 40 policemen where they are taught basic medical aid. They are taught how to save a person who is chocking, or who has just received an electric shock. They can even save people who were about to drown or who just had a heart attack,” an AIIMS official said.

“We plan to train firemen soon. This way, they can help burn victims till specialised medical help arrives,” he added.

True to its name, the Basic Emergency Care Course teaches very ordinary medical procedures in just six hours. People having undergone training are given an identity card. If they do well, they become instructors.

“The course is basically for people who have no medical background. We also have a special training for doctors who want to be all-rounders. A few months ago, some army doctors were given training in different branches of their profession. We took them to the intensive care unit, the trauma care centre and even the main hospital. This way, if a surgery is required and a surgeon is not present, these specially-trained doctors will help the victim stay alive till a surgeon arrives,” said the official.
