As part of its efforts to speed up availability of information on number of foreigners coming to the city and to keep an eye on them, the special branch of the Ahmedabad city police will now collect details of the same online.

As per rules, all hotels in the city are required to fill a C-form whenever a foreign visitor opts to stay at their hotel. This form is then sent to the city police who go through the information provided.

"Earlier, a lot of time was wasted when the form was filled by the hotel, sent to police and then verified. Many a time it so happened that by the time the forms were sent and information verified the concerned foreigner would have already left the city. With the system going online, the filled-up forms can be sent to us immediately through email avoiding any sort of delays," said JCP special branch Shamsher Singh. He said Ahmedabad police department is the first to implement such an online system.

Singh said before this was made online, an employee of the hotel would physically deliver the form to the special branch. "Whenever a foreigner came to stay at a hotel in the city, his name, address, passport details would be filled up in the C-form and submitted to the crime branch. Usually the form would be submitted by evening," said Singh.

The department also carried out a sensitisation workshop on Tuesday with representatives of 200 hotels in the city. Singh said they would be giving the hotels the format in which the details are to be sent.

Hotels have also given the thumbs up to the intitiative. Darius Merchant, general manager, The Gateway Hotel, Ummed (Taj), said the move will make life easy for both the hotels and the police.

He said the online system was already in place across several states. At present it is on a trial basis so the earlier exercise of physically filling up the form would continue. "But once streamlined and put in practice, it will be a boon for us as well," said Merchan.
