As the city inches towards a slew of festive celebrations this weekend, city police are gearing up to ensure adequate security for residents, especially at spots that will witness large gatherings. A major one of these events will be Eid celebrations over the weekend, when thousands of Muslim devotees will gather at various mosques in the city to offer prayers.

According to the police, the coming days will prove a test for the force. And for the very first challenge - the Eid celebrations, the city police are concentrating on 12 mosques in various parts of the city, where large assemblies will occur.

"We are taking every possible measure to ensure peaceful celebrations. The concerned city police stations have been asked to contact the maulvis to know their plans for namaaz, so that we can arrange for police bandobast accordingly," said a source.

Apart from this, there are 34 other spots where a large number of Muslim devotees are expected to gather. Sources said that special arrangements are also needed for areas where there have been disputes among various sects of the Muslim community living there. The city police have hence asked for 2,000 home guard jawans, for peaceful celebrations.

Further, 400 policemen will throng city roads this weekend. On the day of Eid, police bandobast will be in place from 6.00 am onwards, and the city police as a whole will be ready to tackle any possible untoward incident.

"We are taking every possible measure to keep miscreants at bay during the festivals. We have already alerted our police stations and asked them to take necessary measures," said Mohan Jha, in-charge city police commissioner.
