Don’t be surprised if you are quizzed by cops in a bank if you seem to be roaming in the bank branch without any specific work. The police commissioner has instructed police stations to keep a close tab on banks in their areas to prevent thefts and loot inside and just outside the banks.

At least two beat constables will visit a bank in their area and meet bank officials. They will be required to sign a register to be maintained by bank authorities, to record their visit to the bank.

“Bank officials have been told to maintain a register, in which police constables will record their visit to the bank, supposedly every hour,” a police source told DNA.

Suspicious-looking people inside or even outside a bank premises will be questioned and, if needed, can be detained. Police sources claimed that with increased security checks, the number of robberies near banks would go down.

“Every bank should compulsorily have a CCTV camera and high-tech gadgets, along with a guard on duty. Moreover, if any person wants to withdraw a large sum he may ask for help from police. It is only with the public’s co-operation and support that this initiative can be a success,” said a senior police officer.

“Our patrolling will be on throughout the busy hours of the banks. This practice has already begun at a bank located on Ashram road,” he added.

“Police come to our premises and check our customers for anything suspicious every few hours. We have CCTV cameras fitted around our bank, yet the visit of police officials is comforting,” said an employee of a private bank on Ashram road.

The city has witnessed several incidents of thefts and robberies around the banks, including the robbery of Rs61 lakh near Parimal Garden from the employees of Progressive Merchantile Co-operative Bank. In many of these cases, the culprits involved have not yet been rounded up.

Ahmedabad is home to over 500 branches of nationalised and co-operative banks, and, on an average, two cases of people being looted of their money after coming out of the banks, take place everyday. There isn’t one instance to cite wherein the security guard at the bank or the police have nabbed the robbers at the spot.
