A police head constable allegedly gunned down a history-sheeter and the prime accused in the murder of his mother while escorting him to a court.

Head constable R Murugan, who also shot at and injured another accused, was later arrested by police on murder charges and had been remanded to judicial custody, police said.

The incident occurred yesterday when Murugan along with a few other police personnel was escorting R Dhanasekar (24) and V Seeman (28), both facing charges of murdering his mother for gain in September last year, and four other prisoners from the Puzhal Prison to a court in Tiruttani, 90 km from here.

The policeman claimed he opened fire on the two after they tried to escape, but police dismissed the version. The statements of the other policemen escorting the accused did not corroborate his claim, police said.

Dhanasekhar died on the spot after being hit by bullet in the neck and Seeman suffered injuries, police said.

Quoting preliminary inquiry, police sources said there seemed to be no attempt by the deceased to escape and since the killing came under custodial violence, a probe had been ordered. A departmental inquiry would also be conducted.

Dhanasekar was wanted in connection with the murder of three other elderly persons, police said.
