The CBI has arrested two conmen with contrasting backgrounds -- an MBA and a 10th pass -- for faking as senior agency officials in Mumbai and allegedly cheating and extorting money from top business and film personalities.
The CBI has arrested two conmen with contrasting backgrounds -- an MBA and a 10th pass -- for faking as senior agency officials in Mumbai and allegedly cheating and extorting money from top business and film personalities by threatening them with searches.
So far 28 people who were conned by the duo have approached the CBI.
Rajesh Ranjan, an MBA hailing from Bihar, allegedly used to present himself as person with good contacts with CBI, Customs and other agencies and his partner Ashwani Sharma, from Panipat, who is a matriculate and runs a hosiery factory, as senior CBI official who has friendly terms with him.
Suave and smooth talker Ranjan, during the course of his stay in Mumbai, had developed good contacts in the film and business circles. He also moved with girls to attract the public and to project that he has so much social contacts to get the work done, CBI sources claimed.
Seeing his life style, attire and 'connections' with senior officers, people used to approach him to solve their problems and allegedly paid money for getting the work done.
Meanwhile, Sharma with good personality allegedly used to play the role of a senior official of CBI. He even used a car which resembled official car with yellow beacon to give an impression to the public that he is a VIP.
"He approached film personalities, businessmen and other high profile members of public as a senior CBI officer and used to threaten them with arrest and legal action and thereby used to obtain huge amount of money on a ground of closing the CBI investigation," a CBI official said.
"Both the arrested accused are currently in custody," a spokesperson said today.
