Congress today criticised Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for his statement questioning the relevance of celebrating Children's Day on Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday, saying the BJP leader was "full of insecurities".

"Modi is insecure, full of insecurities. He has a sense of insecurity from the name of Nehru, Gandhi and Congress and due to this reason he is falling into the depths of the politics of humiliation," party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters when asked to comment on Modi's statement.

At a convention of chief ministers of BJP-ruled states in Maharasthra, Modi today said, "Jawaharlal Nehru was said to be very fond of kids and his birthday has been christened as Children's Day. Kids called him 'Nehru Chacha' and it brings images of a benevolent Nehru flooding our minds. But what good
has it done to the kids?"

"Let me contrast it with Lal Bahadur Shastri. He coined the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan which electrified farmers and jawans. Shastriji, unlike Nehru, was not a charismatic leader, yet his tenure saw India producing record foodgrains," the BJP leader said.

Singhvi said that it was Congress, which gave Gandhi, Nehru and Shastri to the nation.

Referring to the 2002 Gujarat riots, the Congress spokesperson said, "Modi fails to see any good in anyone except his own activities.

"He should tell the nation how much good he has done to the children of Gujarat, many of whom were orphaned in the violence unleashed by his approach."

Senior party leader Mohan Prakash said, "Nehru had a fond relationship with kids and hence he is called 'chacha'.

On the contrary, the relationship of BJP and in particular Modi with people is of fear.

"Modi has nothing to say about himself so he tries to be in news by commenting against those great persons, who are revered by people of the country."

He said that while Nehru played a key role in the freedom struggle and in the nation building after independence, "Sangh Parivar had no role either in the freedom struggle or in nation building. Hence they resort to such things."
