The Surat Congress on Friday demanded resignation of chief minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah in wake of the hooch tragedy which has claimed more than 80 lives in Ahmedabad till now.

"Narendra Modi and Amit Shah should tender their resignations owning moral responsibility for the hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad. Suspension of few policemen or ordering an inquiry into the incident is not enough," Shravan Rajput, Surat Congress spokesperson, said.

Surat Congress leaders including Sunil Bhukhanwala, Kadir Pirzada, Rizwan Usmani, Dhiru Gajera and others made a representation with the demand to the district collector on Thursday.

The Congress alleged in the representation that illegal liquor trade is flourishing in Mahatma's land under the patronage of police officials, and demanded immediate steps to end the bootlegger-police nexus to stop flow of liquor in Gujarat.

The local unit of the party said that steps must also be taken to close down the large number of illegal liquor dens in Surat.
"It is hardly a secret that illegal liquor making and selling dens are operational all across the city. The administration must act fast and not wait for a tragedy such as the one in Ahmedabad before taking steps to close down these death dens," Rajput added.

Youth Congress workers will stage demonstrations at Chowk Bazaar from 4 pm to 6 pm on Friday in protest of Ahmedabad hooch tragedy.
