Congress today claimed that there was "contradiction" between the views of BJP and its leader Murli Manohar Joshi on the 2G issue even as he rejected the ruling party's allegation that he disfavoured auction of 2G spectrum in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2007.

"If Joshi wishes, we can send him a copy of the letter he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 2, 2007. He wrote in the letter that new players should get opportunity but did not specify which new players. He clearly said in the letter that spectrum should not be auctioned and if it happens, it would damage BSNL and MTNL," party spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters here.

He was replying to questions on Joshi rejecting the allegation that he disfavoured auction of 2G spectrum, saying that he only wanted that PSUs like MTNL and BSNL were not losers.

The Congress spokesperson insisted that "on one hand their senior party leader disfavours auction while on the other hand, BJP is agitating in favour of auction. There is definitely a contradiction between the stands of BJP and Joshi."

Seeking to embarrass the BJP over 2G scam, Congress yesterday released a letter written by Joshi on December 2 2007 in which he appeared disfavouring the auction of spectrum.

In the letter Joshi had also written "leading MNCs operating in the telecom sector have launched a tirade against the allocation of Spectrum to BSNL and MTNL by the government....Some operators have suggested that Spectrum should be auctioned which means there could be a case of hording and cartelisation to the detriment of MTNL and BSNL."

Joshi today denied that his letter states he was against auction. He insisted that his opinion did not matter and the issue was why the government did not go for auction and gave away spectrum at 2001 prices.
