The Congress seems to be putting its house in order for the next assembly elections. In an attempt to show seriousness of purpose and bring unity among Congressmen, top leaders of the state unit of the party came on one platform here on Tuesday.

Those who attended the meeting included Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia, leader of opposition in state assembly Shaktisinh Gohil, senior leader Shankersinh Vaghela, and members of parliament Dr Tushar Chaudhary and Bharatsinh Solanki. It was a New Year meeting for them but the focus was on strengthening the party ahead of the 2012 elections.

At the meeting, the leaders gave a call to all Congress workers to pull up their socks and bury intra- party differences. While Modhwadia talked about strengthening the party by reaching out to the unreached with the help of different wings of the party, Gohil appealed to party workers to work hard to restore Gujarat's pride (Gujarat's Asmita) by winning the polls.

Vaghela, who is party's convener of the election campaign committee, asked leaders to first complete the homework for the elections. “We need to work with team spirit and if we work as a team, the result of elections will be in our favour,” said Vaghela, popularly known as 'Bapu'.

He warned the party workers that nobody should take chief minister Narendra Modi's Sadbhavna fasts in districts lightly.

“Don't take CM's fast lightly. While more people were present in our camp than at CM's fast in Dwarka, Congress leaders in Navsari took the fast lightly and failed to create momentum there. CM's fast is nothing but farce. There are issues and unrest in each district, which we can bring to people's notice. Call widows, anganwadi workers, farmers and unemployed youth to protest against the CM's fast. You don't need anybody's permission to organise such programmes and demonstrations,” said the former chief minister.

He added, “Do the proper homework, discuss and make a list of probable candidates for the assembly elections. There are 70 assembly seats which fall in urban areas, so organise evening meetings in all the areas between 7pm and 10pm. We will be working on the election manifesto and prepare it by February 2012.”

Vaghela also appealed to party workers to rise over internal conflicts in order to succeed in the elections. “People want a change after a decade. We just need to understand that there are only 182 seats in the assembly and there won't be more candidates than this number. So rise over intra-party competitions and be in the race and work for the party. If the party comes to power, there would be space for everyone. Even I don't consider myself for any kind of competition.”
