The Congress questioned BJP MP Maneka Gandhi's letter to the PM over the reported security threat to Varun Gandhi describing it as "most ironical."

"I am finding (it) most ironical that Mrs Maneka Gandhi is reacting so strongly but she did not react at all strongly when the remarks of the observation made by her son known to everybody at that time and now forensically proved to be (that of) her son created the biggest upheaval and divided this society," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told NDTV.

Maneka Gandhi shot off a letter to prime minister Manmohan Singh, saying she was concerned about her son's safety in the wake of the arrest of six sharpshooters of Chota Shakeel gang allegedly planning to kill the lawyer of Varun Gandhi.

Singhvi said, "Let me tell you that the UPA government has always provided even-handed protection to every citizen and shall continue to do so."

In her letter to the prime minister Gandhi wrote "It is with the deepest concern for my son's life and safety that I write to you today."

Singhvi said "Security is always available to citizens and shall be given. For her to react like this today... (she) completely misunderstands what her own son has done." he said.
