Congress today downplayed NCP leader Sharad Pawar's reported remarks that a series of scams had weakened UPA's authority, asserting that the "stray" comments did not reflect a trend and insisting that the alliance had remained strong for the last seven years.

"You are trying to make a summer out of a solitary stray swallow. We do not make such strong interpretations out of stray statements. We are in seven years of strong alliance. To interpret somebody's casual comments as the UPA government having weakened is fallacy," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here.

He was replying to questions on whether the UPA alliance is showing signs of disintegration in the light of Pawar's remarks as well as DMK and Mamata Banerjee's party Trinamool Congress debunking the Centre's stand on many issues in the past.

During an interaction with a newspaper, Pawar had said that a series of scams had weakened the authority of the UPA-II government and this had led to other forces such as the judiciary asserting themselves.
