Congress today sought to dismiss ally Trinamool Congress' opposition to the latest disinvestment plan of the government, maintaining that it was a decision of the Cabinet, which was for implementation.

"A Cabinet decision is a Cabinet decision and it is being implemented," Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters. He said parties are, however, entitled to their views on the issue.

Reacting to the disinvestment plan, Trinamool Congress leader Partho Chatterjee earlier said, "There should not be any disinvestment in profit-making PSUs. If the central government's desired objective is to use this money for social sector, we are against it. Our party believes it is the government's job to look after the social sector".

Tewari, meanwhile, also attacked the Left for their opposition to the disinvestment plan and said they are "completely confused ideologically". All the four left parties have demanded cancellation of the government's decision to divest up to 10 per cent of its shares in profitable public sector units, calling it a "patently anti-national step".

The government had yesterday announced a disinvestment plan that seeks to list all profitable Public Sector Enterprises, a move that would see public offers by over 100 companies.

The funds from such sale would be directly deployed for social sector schemes, instead of being routed through the National Investment Fund (NIF). The Congress leader also dismissed suggestions that there is any negation of the NIF in the new disinvestment plan.

"Under no circumstances there is a negation of the NIF. The only thing is that returns of the NIF have to be used for social purposes...Government has made it clear that returns of that fund will be employed for welfare of people," Tewari said.
