Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh has confirmed that an alliance with the Ajit Singh-led Rashtriya Lok Dal has been clinched.

He, however, refused to get into the details of the seat-sharing arrangement or the RLD’s participation in the union cabinet.

With the Congress central election committee meeting Saturday, another list of party candidates for the 403 member state assembly would be cleared. But this list would be announced only after Eid.

“Our results shall be much better, and you will be surprised,” he told reporters who asked about the party’s chances in the assembly elections. He emphasised that even before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he had predicted that the party would win more than 15 seats, but no one in the media had believed it. “We won 22, so be prepared for a surprise this time as well,” he added.

The Congress leader, who has been a consistent critic of Anna Hazare and his anti-corruption movement, also observed that the Team Anna would have no impact on the party’s chances in Uttar Pradesh.

“He is a confused man. One day he says that he would not oppose the Congress, and the next day he says that he will oppose the Congress in all the five states,” Singh said while commenting on Hazare’s latest statement.

“Can’t you see the connection? Anna Hazare wants me to be sent to mental asylum. Nitin Gadkari says the best place for me is a mental asylum. Ravi Shankar Prasad says I have lost my mental balance. Smriti Irani calls me a demon, and Ramdev calls me the son of a demon. They are all a part of the same group,” the Congress leader added.
