The Gujarat legislative assembly was on Monday adjourned by speaker Ganpat Vasava for 20 minutes after an uproar by the Opposition Congress demanding a 'Zero Hour session'.

The Congress raised the demand for Zero Hour for discussion on death of over 150 persons due to leptospirosis in south Gujarat region.

It also wanted a discussion on the issue of 23 children, suffering from Thalassemia, getting infected with HIV virus after blood transfusion at a government hospital at Junagadh district.

However, speaker Vasava rejected the Congress' demand leading to an uproar in the House. Congress MLAs shouted slogans against the Narendra Modi government and also threw papers in the Well of the House.

Following the commotion, the Speaker adjourned the House for over 20 minutes.

Talking to reporters outside the Assembly, Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil said, "The assembly is meeting after a period of six months and our MLAs wanted to raise the important issue of leptospirosis and Thalassemia children being infected with HIV."

"But the speaker did not allow us to raise the issues in the Zero Hour," he added.

There have been over 150 deaths due to leptospirosis in south Gujarat region since the last week of June.
