India today said it is following "closely and with concern" recent developments in Kyrgyzstan, where the opposition has formed an alternative government after widespread violence in which 75 people including the interior minister were killed.

In a statement, ministry of external affairs said, "India is following closely and with concern recent internal developments in the Kyrgyz Republic, a friendly Central Asian country in our extended neighbourhood.

"We hope that the current political situation will be resolved quickly and that peace and stability would return to the Kyrgyz Republic."

Opposition protesters killed Kyrgyzstan's interior minister, took the deputy prime minister hostage and captured state TV in a deadly revolt on April 7 against president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who has fled the country.
