The Andhra Pradesh government today decided to double the compensation to Rs2 lakh for families of victims who have lost their lives in the floods. The decision was taken by chief minister K Rosaiah while reviewing the flood situation at a meeting here.

Rosaiah, who presided over the meeting in the chief minister's chamber, said though the flood situation was fast improving, the administration needs to be cautious in Krishna and Guntur districts, where low-lying areas are still inundated.

The CM was told by the officials that the principal secretary (irrigation) was in regular contact with his counterpart in Karnataka, who has reduced outflows from Tungabhadra and Narayanpur Dams to minimise losses in Kurnool and Vijayawada districts.

The irrigation department officials informed Rosaiah that so far 719 minor irrigation tanks of various capacities had been damaged in the floods, one of the worst to hit the state in decades.
