Commonwealth Games case: Charge sheet in QBR soon

The CBI will soon file a charge sheet in the AM Films and AM Vans case in the Commonwealth Games scam as it has received some crucial documents from Scotland Yard in response to its Letters Rogatory.

Sources in the agency said that documents received from the Scotland Yard have been analysed and a charge sheet in the case may soon be filed in the case.

The case relates to alleged fudging of transport payments for the Queen's Baton Relay in London as part of Commonwealth Games ceremonies. The vehicles in London were allegedly hired at exorbitant rates from AM Films and AM Cars -- owned by one Ashish Patel.

Senior officials of the agency were of the view that documents received from the Scotland Yard are crucial in establishing alleged irregularities and quid pro quo in awarding contracts given by the Organising Committee to Patel's companies.

CBI has registered two cases against OC officials and Patel on November 15, 2010, but it could not file charge sheet as it was waiting for a response to the Letters Rogatory from the UK.

Sacked OC chief Suresh Kalmadi had allegedly authorised the payments to Patel's firms at exorbitant rates.

"It is alleged that in relation to the QBR held on October 29, 2009, the OC awarded the work of transportation to the AM Cars and Van Hire Ltd at exorbitantly high rates without following the standard tender process," the CBI FIR stated.
