The Gujarat-North Gujarat Universities Area Teachers’ Association (GNGUATA) staged a demonstration demanding the implementation of the recommendations of the Chaddha Committee of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the pay scale of college and university teachers.

Nearly 100 teachers from colleges affiliated to Gujarat University and North Gujarat University gathered at the Gujarat University campus on Tuesday, to sign a letter in blood, to be forwarded to the state government. Prior to this, signatures in blood were collected from several city colleges.

“Our only demand is that the state government implement the recommendations of the Chaddha Committee regarding the pay scale of teachers of colleges and universities. On Tuesday, more than 1,500 teachers in colleges in all district and taluka headquarters signed the letter in blood,” said KS Shashtri, president of the Gujarat State Federation of University and College Teachers’ Associations (GSFUCTA). Shashtri and RS Patel, president of the Gujarat University Teachers’ Association (GUTA) addressed the gathering on Tuesday.

“At an event in Visnagar, college teachers presented state education minister Ramanlal Vora with a bouquet of flowers sprinkled with their blood and announced that they were offering this in protest against the state government resolution implementing the pay scale as recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission. In reply, Vora said that the state government is working on this,” Shashtri said.

“While the Diwali festive season is around, the teachers should be given some time to strengthen their movement for their rights. If today the teachers do not unite in their spare time, to fight for the issue of their pay scale, they may not be able to unite on other issues in the future. We should show our solidarity by participating in each and every protest programme by gathering in large numbers,” Patel said.
