Cold conditions continue in Delhi

Northwesterly winds blowing over north India, and snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have resulted in cold conditions in the national capital.

Icy winds blowing from the snow-capped mountains in northern states continue to grip Delhi, with the mercury hovering around six degree Celsius today.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.2 degrees, which is one degree below normal for this time of the year. Yesterday, the minimum was 5.7 degree Celsius while on Sunday it was 5.5 degrees.

Northwesterly winds blowing over north India and snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have resulted in cold conditions in the national capital, the Met office said.

A thin layer of fog also engulfed the city skyline in the morning, reducing the visibility to 400 metres. The fog at the airport delayed about half a dozen domestic flights.

The weatherman has predicted mist in the morning with maximum and minimum likely to hover around 22 and seven degrees Celsius respectively tomorrow.

The lowest minimum of the season was recorded on Saturday when the mercury plummeted to 5.2 degrees.

In 2008, the lowest minimum of the month was 6.4 degree Celsius recorded on December 26 while in 2007, it was 3.9 degrees on December 29. The record for 2006 was 7.3 degree Celsius on November 29.

The all-time record for minimum temperature was recorded on December 26 of 1945 when the mercury dipped to 1.1 degree Celsius.
