Coast Guard and NDRF called in to rescue people in Jamnagar

Jamnagar has so far received 230% of the average rainfall of the season, district officials said.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were called in to rescue people stranded in villages in Jamnagar district with incessant rains paralysing life over the last few days.

Thousands of people from over 150 villages have been shifted to safer places, district officials said today.

There has been no electricity in over 220 villages of the district since last two days, district collector Sandeep Kumar said.

Khambadia taluka was the worst-hit where Coast Guard was called in to rescue a family of nine which was stranded at Jam Raval village. While a team of NDRF rescued five persons from the Mota Mandana village.

According to the district officials, food packets and necessary medicines have been distributed to people.

Jamnagar has so far received 230% of the average rainfall of the season, district officials said.

Meanwhile the weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rains in parts of Saurashtra, Kutch and South Gujarat region in the next 24 hours.

Monsoon was vigorous over Saurashtra, Kutch and active over Gujarat region today, they said.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Ahmedabad, moderate to rather heavy rains or thundershower would occur at most places in Gujarat in the next 24 hours.

Due to the vigorous monsoon condition, squally weather is likely to prevail off the Gujarat coast with wind speed between 35 to 45 kmph which could reach upto 55 kmph, they said.

Fishermen have been advised not to go out in the sea during the next 24 hours, they added.

Heavy rains lashed the city of Ahmedabad this evening causing water logging in low lying areas of the city.

Many of the under passes at Mithakhali, Gujarat College and Akhbarnagar were filled with rain water because of which the traffic through this routes was temporarily diverted.

Heavy rains also left many people stranded as autorickshaw and bus services were affected.

A state government official of the water resources department said that out of the 196 reservoirs in Gujarat 126 were filled over 70% of its capacity.

The water in Sardar Sarovar dam on Narmada river was at 116.34 meters and the water in its reservoir was 4395.23 million cubic meter, they said.
