In Gujarat’s golden jubilee year, the state aims to eradicate illiteracy among all citizens between the ages of 15 and 60 years through a unique Saraswati Yatra, which will go to every home in Gujarat. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi made this announcement while addressing more than 1.5 crore schoolchildren via live cable and satellite television on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on Saturday.

“To bring a qualitative change in the state of education in Gujarat, Teachers’ Day is an important day for the launch of this ambitious public movement,” Modi said while requesting that every literate Gujarat citizen join this drive.

In a highly emotional speech, Modi said that achieving the golden jubilee development goals of the state was very important. “I urge the youth to five 100 hours every year to the cause of increasing the literacy rate in Gujarat,” he said.

The chief minister said that the current decade will be written in golden words in the history of the state as a number of centres of education and research excellence will be launched by 2011-12. “Gujarat will be known everywhere as an educational hub. In the next few years, we will be teaching the Upanishads via satellite,” he said.

“On November 12-14, the state government will organise a massive Gunotsav. I appeal to the retired award-winning teachers to participate in this drive with a large heart,” he said. During his Teachers’ Day address, Modi cited the example of former president Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, in whose memory the day is celebrated.

The chief minister also presented the best teachers’ awards to 35 secondary and higher-secondary teachers on Saturday. Many of the teachers who were awarded on Saturday donated the award money to the Kanya Kelvani Nidhi. In addition to the chief minister, state education minister Raman Vora, education minister Jaysinh Chauhan, principal secretary of education Hasmukh Adhia and primary education secretary RP Gupta were present at the event.
