The tradition of awarding gold medals to the best students and forgetting about them after the convocations is going to end soon, with the formation of a club exclusively for them.

The commissioner of higher education is working on the idea that will give such alumnus a chance to share their expertise with other  students in the educational reforms that are taking place in the state.

According to sources, the commissioner of higher education department is trying to set up the club before the commencement of the new academic year 2010-11. These medallists will be helping task forces set up to implement choice-based credit systems in universities across the state. Further, they will also contribute their academic skills to the newly set up Children University where they will be guiding, motivating or teaching the students.

"We are trying to get the expertise of these gold medalist students because they all have something different in their skills, approach and behaviour among others. We want to utilise their abilities in the process of educational reforms in higher education and in Children University," said a top official of the higher education department who requested not to be quoted.

Sources said by and large every university in the state has nearly 150 gold medallists. The department will approach these students with the help of universities eventually and interested medallists can join hands with various reforms or schemes.

"Every year dozens of students pass out with gold medals but they don't get any chance to show their skills to their universities. Therefore, we are trying to involve these brilliant minds in order to keep the new education initiatives on track," said the official.
