Several civil society members staged a demonstration here today to protest against the attack on senior Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan. Led by Sheikh Abdul Rashid, MLA from Langate in North Kashmir, dozens of civil society members, including lawyers and activists, staged a sit-in at Press Enclave in the city.

Bhushan was yesterday assaulted by three youths belonging to a right-wing group for his advocacy of plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. "We have gathered here to lodge our strong protest against the brutal attack on Bhushan," Rashid said, adding "We need to rise above political affiliations and raise our voice against this barbaric, disgusting and gruesome act aimed at curbing the freedom of expression."

"If they are not ready to hear their intellectuals, how can they reach out to the people of Kashmir," Rashid asked.
