A city-based realtor, Mahendra Patel, was killed allegedly by his business rivals early on Saturday morning. His body was found from near Jhank area in Gandhinagar. Patel was a resident of Hari Om Society in Ghodasar and was killed probably with a sword. The murderers later poured acid on the body.  The Dabhoda police have registered a case of murder in this connection. "Patel might have been killed early in the morning at some other place and his body could have been thrown here," investigating officer NP Gohil told DNA.

District superintendent of police, Gandhinagar, Piyush Patel said, "We are not ruling out any possibility but prima facie it appears that loot was not the motive of the criminals."
Patel's body was found from near Bhagat Bapa farmhouse on Raipur-Jhank road in Dabhoda. Patel was missing since Friday afternoon after he left for his site Shreeji Society in Vahelal. The body was found very close to the construction site.

According to Patel's wife Jyotsna, Patel called her at 1.15 am on Saturday and told her that he would return home in an hour. However, when he did not return till 2.30 she called him on his mobile, which was not reachable.  At around 7.30 am on Saturday, she received a call from the police requesting her to identify a body. Jyotsna told the police that she didn't suspect anyone, who could have killed him for any reason.

However, police sources said that a land dispute judgment had gone in Patel's favour a few months back and the police would question the opposite party for any clue.
The police have found a sword and Patel's mobile phone from the spot. According to the investigating officer, marks at the spot indicate that a car was used to throw the body at the location.

Sources said Patel had received sharp weapon injuries on his head, chest and hands. The attackers later threw acid on his body. "The motive of the killers was to destroy the builder's identity after killing him so that the body cannot be identified easily," Gohil told DNA. Patel is survived by wife Jyotsna, daughter Dhara, a student of MCom, and son Ravi, an HSC student.
