Former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan, who is under the pressure to step down as the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has backtracked his assurance to disclose the assets saying this information would not serve any purpose.

Revelation of the assets owned by him and his family members is an invasion of privacy, he said. Earlier he had offered to disclose the assets.

Balakrishnan has told income tax department that he does not want to disclose his assets because they are not related to public welfare in any way. Balakrishnan is the first CJI whose assets had been investigated by police in Kerala. His family members are also under the I-T scanner following allegations that they have amassed huge wealth during Balakrishnan’s tenure as CJI.

An RTI applicant T Balachandran has sought information and documents, certified copies of I-T returns submitted by Balakrishnan for 2005-06 to 2009-10, details of investigation and inquiry of department against him and his son, B Pradeep, two daughters — Sony and Rani, sons-in-law J Benny and V Sreenijan and brother G Bhaskaran.

A lawyer, Manohar Lal Sharma, has urged the apex court to direct the government to hold a judicial inquiry into allegations of disproportionate assets against Balakrishnan and his family members and their alleged involvement in dubious land deals.

On his PIL related to Balakrishnan and his family members, the Supreme Court has already sought official translation in English language of documents relating to the property of the NHRC chief. Once the court is provided with the translated version, it may explore the possibility of directing a CBI probe into the assets owned by Balakrishnan and Co.
