Reacting sharply to the BJP accusation of “failing to solve” nine terror attacks during P Chidambaram’s tenure, the ministry of home affairs asserted on Thursday that all but seven major terror cases have been solved.

Highlighting Israeli car attack as not a “one-off incident”, the BJP on Wednesday had blamed Centre’s complacent attitude for failing to solve 9 terror cases since 26/11 Mumbai terror attack in 2008, including the German Bakery case where the nearby Chahbad House was also the target.

Accusing home ministry for showing lack of seriousness in wake of recent incident of detaining a Mumbai cop by Delhi police after it failed to nab the real culprits, BJP spokeperson Prakash Javadekar also sought a detailed probe with a new approach in all the cases.

Retorting, the MHA said, “Since May 2000 there have been 46 major terrorist incidents. Of these, all but 7 cases have been solved. In 9 cases, convictions have been obtained. In the remaining 30 cases, charge sheets have been filed in 29 cases and trial has commenced in 19 cases. Two cases ended in acquittal and appeals have been preferred.”

Using the opportunity to rub the BJP where it hurts, the MHA also gave a synopsis of Hindu terror related cases, saying it is also pertinent to point out that some cases are being reinvestigated/ further investigated including the bomb blasts in Malegaon in 2006 and 2008, Samjhauta Express, Mecca Masjid, Ajmer Shariff Dargah and Modassa in Gujarat.

“The NIA has arrested Nabakumar Sarkar alias Swami Aseemanand, Lokesh Sharma, Devender Gupta and some others. Recently, NIA has arrested Kamal Chouhan and it is expected that more arrests will be made leading to the solving of the above cases,” the ministry added. The ministry also claimed of the 7 “unsolved” cases, four cases are close to being solved.
