Chhattisgarh government to reduce mortality rates in the state

The state's health and family welfare department has decided to cut child mortality rate in the state from 57 to 52 per 1000 and maternal mortality rate from 335 per lakh to 310 in the current financial year.

The Chhattisgarh government has decided to reduce the maternal mortality and child mortality rates in the state, official sources said today.

The national average rate of child mortality is 53 per thousand. To reduce child mortality, institutional delivery is being promoted in the state, sources said.

At present, delivery rates in the hospitals across the state is around 48 to 50%. The government is planning to increase it to 90% by 2012, officials of the health and family welfare department said.

Besides, Newborn Health Unit will be set up in hospitals in 18 districts in the state, they said.

Similarly, to achieve the maternal mortality rate, birth registration, its monitoring and prenatal micro action plan is also being prepared, they said.

They also added that the country's 56 community health centres has been identified as first unit and in 258 primary health centres, additional nurses and technical staff along with skilled practitioners have been set up.
