Madhya Pradesh's Chambal region, which was once infamous for being a haven for dacoits, is in spotlight again for a wrong reason - drastic decline in the population of girl child.

According to the latest provisional census report - 2011, Morena district in Chambal division has emerged as the place having the lowest sex ratio in Madhya Pradesh with only 825 girls per 1,000 boys in the age group of age group 0-6 years, thus registering a decline of 12 girls per 1,000 boys.

As per the 2001 census report, sex ratio in this age group was 837 girls per 1,000 boys in the division.

The best sex-ratio in the state has been found in the tribal-dominated Alirajpur area where there are 971 girls per 1000 boys.

However, the situation is not so good in other parts of the state with girl ratio decreasing by 20 in Madhya Pradesh.

In the 2001 census report, there were 932 girls against 1000 boys in Madhya Pradesh between 0-6 age group while in the recent provisional census report, the ratio is 912 girls per 1000 boys.

Social organisation Madhya Pradesh Voluntary Health Association's executive director Mukesh Sinha said female foeticide was the main reason behind the decline.

He said that there was a need to strictly implement the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act in the state.
