Laying emphasis on economic management and autonomy of the local bodies, the chief minister said that the Municipal Corporations had the capacity of becoming self-reliant with better planning.
Advocating for better coordination between local, state and union governments, Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank today said that challenges before the local governance are increasing with the rapid urbanisation.
"The concept of local government could only be strengthened by making better coordination between the Union government, the state governments, and the local bodies,” Nishank said while inaugurating a meeting of the All India Mayor Council Working-Committee here.
Nishank said that the challenges before the municipal bodies, especially, the Municipal Corporations were increasing with rapid urbanisation.

He said strengthening of the municipal bodies and decentralisation of powers were parallel processes.
Nishank said the state government was committed towards urban development and which is why Haridwar and Haldwani had recently been assigned the status of Municipal Corporations.
Welcoming the guests, Mayor of Dehradun Vinod Chamoli said that the Municipal Corporations had a big challenge of strengthening internal system as well as maintaining relationships with the Union government and the state governments.
He hoped that the mayors' conference of the Working-Committee would be meaningful as well as fruitful. Mayors from many other cities of the country, representatives of the local bodies and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
