In order to increase the capacity of teaching staff in Gujarat under the infrastructure sector, government of Gujarat has approved Cept University as the state-level Anchor Institute for Infrastructure Sector (AIIS).

AIIS will conduct thematic monthly seminars which are aimed at capacity building in the state. Currently, AIIS is carrying out a seminar on urban waste management (UWM) — training of trainers (TOT), from June 7 — 11, where each day will encompass one module of UWM.

Professor Mona Iyer said, "The approach to UWM needs comprehensive rethinking of 'waste management', moving towards waste processing and recycling with the objective to ultimately minimise waste, a decentralised administration of waste, minimising environmental impacts and reconciling investment costs with long-term goals." According to her, the seminar is important to enhance and augment the understanding of these emerging issues.

On the first day during his lecture, PU Asnani, chairman of Urban Management Consultants, said, "AMC is setting up six transfer stations of 2,500 tons capacity across various locations in Ahmedabad so that the smaller trucks don't have to travel to the main dumping ground which is over 15 kms away.  Another larger vehicle will transfer the waste to the landfill. The government of India has approved this project worth Rs118 crore. They are also setting up two mote fuel pellet plants of 500 and 800 tons respectively."

Prashant Pandya, deputy director, SWM & Conservancy Services at AMC said, "There are six transfer stations coming up at Rakhial, Asarwa, Ghodasar, Ghatlodia-Chandlodia-Sola road, Makarba-Vejalpur and Juna Vadaj. As for the fuel pellet plants, they are already in the construction stage and our target for completion is Dec 2011."
