The Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University, Ahmedabad, has decided to increase fees for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes by 10% to 15% from the academic year 2011-2012.

Sources at CEPT said that this had become necessary as the institute's expenses have gone up after faculty salaries were increased to meet the 6th pay commission's recommendations.

The decision to hike fees was taken at a board meeting of the university in March. The fee hike is expected to affect 1250 new students who would be taking admission at CEPT University this year, the sources said.

The university is strapped for cash not only because of the hike in faculty salaries and increase in cost of materials and advertisements, but also because of the irregular flow of grants from the central government.

Sources said that CEPT had not received, for the last two years, Rs2 crore per year in grant from the central government.

Talking to DNA, registrar of the university Anita Hiranandani said the CEPT board had approved the proposal to increase the fee by 10-15% from the academic year beginning 2011. According to Hiranandani, after the hike, the new fees would be Rs20,000 per semester (for undergraduate courses with 10 semesters) and Rs1.38 lakh for two-year postgraduate courses (current fee: Rs1.20 lakh).

"After the implementation of the 6th pay commission's recommendations, faculty salary has almost doubled. Expenses on all other heads have also gone up. The institute desperately needs more funds and this is why the board decided to increase fees for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes," said Hiranandani.

She said around 560 students will be admitted in different undergraduate courses and around 700 students in the postgraduate courses.
