Learning about a city through books is one thing while getting to know it by cycling on its streets is something entirely different.

A group of 20 people in the Ahmedabd, primarily comprising students and faculty members of CEPT, have come together to carry out a 'cycling series' to explore and learn about several aspects of the city like economics, environment and society.

The 'cycling series', being organised by the Ahmedabad chapter of Oikos International-an international students' body and Cept University -- commenced on May 1 and is likely to end on May 15.

“However, our aim is not just to complete this series. We started it on an experimental basis and hence have to reach our target in only three Sundays. However, if people's interest continues, then we may even take it forward for all Sundays of the month and maybe even the year,” Soumini Raja, president of Oikos Ahmedabad chapter, said.

The first session of the series on May 1 was spent in identifying and discovering dimensions of sustainability and economics.

“On May 8, we will focus on environment while the third Sunday will be devoted to society. This Sunday, the exercise will commence from CEPT campus passing through Helmet Circle, RTO, Gandhi Ashram, Shahibaug and back.”

The May 8 session will be organised in association with CEE, South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN) and ReDiscover Bicycle, a grouped formed by NID students.

“Taking the humble cycle as medium to promote sustainability in economics, environment and society is definitely a new and different concept,” NIDian Animesh Shrivastava, co-founder of ReDiscover Bicycle said.

He added, “Generally people start a 'cycling series' with the intention of promoting cycling to save and conserve the environment. But taking the same cycle as a medium to promote, discuss and talk about the city is a whole new dimension, which is great.”
